Software Engineer Interview Questions and Answers
Software engineering interviews usually mix coding problems, technical discussion and behavioral questions. Beyond the right answer, interviewers want to hear how you think: talk through your approach, trade-offs and how you would test your code.
1. Walk me through a project you’re proud of.
Why interviewers ask this: It shows your technical depth, your role on a team and how you make decisions.
How to answer: Explain the problem, your specific contribution, one or two key technical decisions and the outcome.
Example answer
I rebuilt our checkout service, which was timing out at peak traffic. I moved payment processing to a queue and added caching for product data. Checkout errors during our biggest sale dropped to almost zero.
2. How do you approach a coding problem you haven’t seen before?
Why interviewers ask this: Interviewers care about your problem-solving process as much as the solution.
How to answer: Describe clarifying the requirements, working through examples, starting with a simple solution, then improving it.
Example answer
I restate the problem and ask about edge cases, work through a small example by hand, write a straightforward solution first, then look at its time and space complexity and optimise if needed.
3. How do you debug a production issue?
Why interviewers ask this: It tests your systematic thinking and how you work under pressure.
How to answer: Explain gathering evidence (logs, metrics, recent changes), forming a hypothesis, fixing safely, and preventing recurrence.
Example answer
I check what changed recently and look at logs and error rates to narrow down where it’s failing. If a recent deploy is the cause, I roll back first, then fix properly and add a test or alert so we catch it earlier next time.
4. Explain the difference between a process and a thread.
Why interviewers ask this: It checks computer science fundamentals.
How to answer: Give a clear, short definition and a practical implication.
Example answer
A process has its own memory space, while threads run inside a process and share its memory. Threads are lighter to create, but because they share memory you need to handle concurrent access carefully.
5. How do you make sure your code is maintainable?
Why interviewers ask this: Teams want engineers who write code others can work with.
How to answer: Mention readable naming, small focused functions, tests, code review and documentation where it helps.
Example answer
I keep functions small and clearly named, write tests for the important behaviour, and ask for reviews early. If a decision isn’t obvious from the code, I leave a short comment explaining why.
6. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a technical decision.
Why interviewers ask this: It shows how you collaborate and handle conflict on a team.
How to answer: Use STAR: explain your reasoning, how you raised it, and how the team decided.
Example answer
I disagreed with adding a new database for one feature. I wrote a short comparison of the options and costs, we discussed it as a team, and we agreed to use our existing database with a new table instead.
7. How do you approach testing?
Why interviewers ask this: It shows how you think about quality.
How to answer: Describe the kinds of tests you write and how you decide what to test.
Example answer
I write unit tests for business logic, a few integration tests for important flows, and I focus on edge cases where bugs are likely. For anything critical, I also check how it behaves when a dependency fails.
8. What questions do you have about our engineering team?
Why interviewers ask this: Your questions show what you value in a team.
How to answer: Ask about how the team plans work, reviews code, deploys and supports on-call.
Example answer
How does the team decide what to build each sprint, and how often do you deploy to production?
