1. Why did you choose nursing?
Why interviewers ask this: It shows your motivation and commitment.
How to answer: Share a genuine reason and connect it to the kind of nurse you want to be.
Example answer
I saw how the nurses cared for my grandmother in hospital and how much difference they made to our family. I want to give patients that same calm and compassionate care.
2. How do you handle a stressful shift?
Why interviewers ask this: Nursing is demanding, and employers need resilient staff.
How to answer: Explain how you prioritise, stay calm, and ask for support.
Example answer
I prioritise patients by clinical need, communicate clearly with the team, and ask for help early if my workload isn’t safe. After a hard shift, I make time to rest and debrief.
3. Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult patient.
Why interviewers ask this: It tests empathy and communication.
How to answer: Use STAR, showing patience and respect for the patient.
Example answer
A patient was refusing medication because they were frightened. I sat with them, explained what the medication was for, answered their questions, and they agreed to take it.
4. How do you prioritise care for several patients?
Why interviewers ask this: Prioritisation affects patient safety.
How to answer: Mention clinical need, the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation), and reassessment.
Example answer
I assess each patient’s condition, prioritise anyone unstable or at risk using the ABCs, and keep reassessing during the shift as things change.
5. What would you do if you noticed a colleague making a mistake?
Why interviewers ask this: Patient safety depends on speaking up.
How to answer: Explain that you would address it immediately and appropriately, and escalate if needed.
Example answer
If a patient were at risk, I’d speak up straight away. Otherwise I’d raise it privately with my colleague, and report it through the proper channels if needed, because patient safety comes first.
6. How do you communicate with patients’ families?
Why interviewers ask this: Families are part of the care team.
How to answer: Show empathy, clarity and respect for confidentiality.
Example answer
I keep families updated within the limits of confidentiality, explain things in plain language, and make time for their questions, especially when they’re anxious.
7. How do you keep your clinical knowledge up to date?
Why interviewers ask this: Healthcare practice changes constantly.
How to answer: Mention training, reading and learning from colleagues.
Example answer
I complete my required training, read updates from professional bodies, and learn from experienced colleagues on the ward.
8. Why do you want to work on this unit?
Why interviewers ask this: It shows interest in the specialty and the team.
How to answer: Connect your experience and goals to the unit’s patients and work.
Example answer
I enjoyed my placement in a similar unit and want to build my skills with this patient group. I’ve also heard great things about the team’s support for new nurses.
