Interview questions

Project Manager Interview Questions and Answers

Project manager interviews focus on how you plan, manage risk, communicate with stakeholders and deliver on time. Use real projects with clear scope, budget and results.

1. How do you plan a new project?

Why interviewers ask this: Planning is the foundation of project delivery.

How to answer: Describe defining goals and scope, breaking down the work, estimating, and agreeing the plan with stakeholders.

Example answer

I start by agreeing goals and scope with the sponsor, break the work into milestones, estimate with the people doing the work, identify risks, and share a plan everyone signs off on.

2. Tell me about a project that went off track.

Why interviewers ask this: Every project hits problems; interviewers want to see how you recover.

How to answer: Use STAR, focusing on how you spotted the issue and what you changed.

Example answer

A system migration was slipping because testing took longer than planned. I re-sequenced the work, added a tester for three weeks, and agreed a revised date with the sponsor. We delivered one week late instead of five.

3. How do you manage stakeholders with different priorities?

Why interviewers ask this: Balancing stakeholders is a core skill.

How to answer: Explain how you understand each stakeholder’s goals and use the project’s objectives to guide trade-offs.

Example answer

I meet each stakeholder to understand what matters to them, then bring conflicts back to the project goals and ask the sponsor to decide when needed, so decisions are transparent.

4. How do you manage risks?

Why interviewers ask this: Proactive risk management prevents delays.

How to answer: Describe identifying, scoring and tracking risks, with owners and mitigations.

Example answer

I keep a risk log with likelihood, impact, an owner and a mitigation for each risk, and review it in weekly status meetings.

5. How do you handle scope creep?

Why interviewers ask this: Uncontrolled scope is a common cause of failure.

How to answer: Explain your change process and how you show the impact of changes.

Example answer

Every new request goes through a quick change process that shows the effect on time and cost. The sponsor then decides whether to add it, swap it for something else, or leave it for a later phase.

6. Which methodologies do you use?

Why interviewers ask this: It checks fit with how the team works.

How to answer: Name what you have used and when each works best.

Example answer

I use Agile for software work where requirements evolve, and a more traditional phased approach for projects with fixed deadlines and dependencies, like office moves.

7. How do you keep a team motivated?

Why interviewers ask this: Project managers often lead without direct authority.

How to answer: Mention clear goals, recognition, removing blockers and listening.

Example answer

I make sure everyone knows why the project matters, remove blockers quickly, and recognise good work in team updates.

8. How do you report project status?

Why interviewers ask this: Clear communication builds trust.

How to answer: Describe what you report, how often, and how you flag problems.

Example answer

I send a short weekly update with progress against milestones, key risks, and decisions needed, using a simple red, amber and green status, and I raise problems as soon as I see them.
