Product Manager Interview Questions and Answers
Product manager interviews test product sense, analytical thinking, prioritisation and how you work with engineering, design and business teams. Structure your answers, state your assumptions, and tie decisions back to users and goals.
1. What is your favourite product and how would you improve it?
Why interviewers ask this: It tests product sense and user empathy.
How to answer: Pick a product you know well, name a specific user and problem, propose an improvement, and say how you would measure it.
Example answer
I use a budgeting app daily. Casual users struggle to categorise transactions, so I’d suggest categories automatically with one-tap confirmation, and measure success by the share of transactions categorised within a week.
2. How do you prioritise features?
Why interviewers ask this: Prioritisation is a core part of the job.
How to answer: Describe a framework (impact vs effort, or reach, impact, confidence and effort) and how you use data and stakeholder input.
Example answer
I score ideas on expected impact on our goal, confidence in that impact, and effort. Then I review the ranking with engineering and design, because effort estimates and user research often change the order.
3. How would you measure the success of a feature?
Why interviewers ask this: It checks analytical thinking and how you define goals.
How to answer: Start from the feature’s goal, choose a primary metric, add guardrail metrics, and define the time frame.
Example answer
For a new onboarding checklist, my main metric would be the share of new users who complete setup in their first week, with guardrails on sign-up rate and support tickets.
4. Tell me about a product you launched.
Why interviewers ask this: It shows your end-to-end ownership and results.
How to answer: Use STAR, covering discovery, decisions, launch and measured outcome.
Example answer
I led the launch of saved searches. Interviews showed users re-ran the same searches daily. We shipped a simple first version in six weeks, and within a month a quarter of weekly active users had saved a search.
5. How do you handle disagreement with engineering?
Why interviewers ask this: Product managers influence without authority.
How to answer: Show that you listen to technical concerns, explain the user and business context, and look for options together.
Example answer
When engineering said a feature would take a quarter, I explained which part mattered most to users, and together we found a smaller first version we could ship in three weeks.
6. A key metric dropped 10% last week. What do you do?
Why interviewers ask this: It tests structured problem-solving under ambiguity.
How to answer: Check whether the data is correct, then segment by time, platform, region and user type, and look for recent changes.
Example answer
First I’d confirm it isn’t a tracking issue. Then I’d break it down by platform, region and new vs returning users, and check recent releases and marketing changes to find where the drop is concentrated.
7. How do you decide what not to build?
Why interviewers ask this: Saying no is as important as saying yes.
How to answer: Explain how you compare requests against goals and how you communicate a no.
Example answer
If a request doesn’t move our current goal, I say so clearly, explain the reasoning, and log it so we can revisit it if priorities change.
8. Why do you want to be a product manager here?
Why interviewers ask this: It checks motivation and knowledge of the company.
How to answer: Connect the company’s product and users to your experience and interests.
Example answer
I’ve spent five years building tools for small businesses, and your product serves exactly that audience. I’d love to apply what I’ve learned about their needs to a product I already use.
