Sales Interview Questions and Answers

Sales interviews test your process, resilience and results. Bring numbers from your past roles (quota attainment, deal sizes, pipeline) and be ready to show how you sell in a role-play.

1. Sell me this pen.

Why interviewers ask this: It shows whether you ask questions before pitching.

How to answer: Start by asking about the buyer’s needs, then connect the product to those needs and ask for the sale.

Example answer

How often do you sign documents or take notes in meetings? What frustrates you about the pens you use now? … Based on that, this pen never smudges and fits in your pocket. Shall I get you a box for the team?

2. Walk me through your sales process.

Why interviewers ask this: It shows how structured and repeatable your selling is.

How to answer: Describe each stage from prospecting to close, with what you do and how you move deals forward.

Example answer

I research target accounts, reach out with a relevant insight, run a discovery call to understand their problem, tailor a demo, agree next steps at every meeting, and handle objections before sending a proposal.

3. How do you handle objections?

Why interviewers ask this: Objections are part of every sale.

How to answer: Show that you listen, clarify the real concern, and respond with evidence.

Example answer

If a buyer says it’s too expensive, I ask what they’re comparing it with, then show the cost of their current problem and how quickly the product pays for itself.

4. Tell me about a deal you lost.

Why interviewers ask this: It tests self-awareness and learning.

How to answer: Be honest about what happened and what you changed afterwards.

Example answer

I lost a large deal because I only spoke to one contact, who then left the company. Now I make sure I build relationships with at least three people in every account.

5. How do you handle rejection?

Why interviewers ask this: Resilience is essential in sales.

How to answer: Show that you learn from rejection and keep your activity high.

Example answer

I treat each no as feedback. I note why it happened, adjust my approach if there’s a pattern, and keep my daily outreach targets so one no doesn’t slow me down.

6. What was your quota and how did you perform?

Why interviewers ask this: Results are the clearest evidence of sales ability.

How to answer: Give specific numbers and context.

Example answer

My annual quota was set at a specific revenue target and I finished at 112% of it, mostly by expanding existing accounts.

7. How do you build a pipeline?

Why interviewers ask this: Consistent prospecting separates strong salespeople.

How to answer: Describe your channels and daily or weekly habits.

Example answer

I block time every morning for outreach, mix email, calls and LinkedIn, and ask happy customers for referrals, which tend to close faster.

8. Why sales, and why this company?

Why interviewers ask this: It checks motivation and product fit.

How to answer: Connect what you enjoy about selling to the company’s product and customers.

Example answer

I enjoy helping customers solve real problems, and I believe in your product because I’ve seen what it saves teams like the ones I sell to today.
