Seeing “not retained” next to a job application can be confusing. In most cases it means the employer has decided not to move your application forward for that role.
What “Not Retained” Means
“Not retained” is hiring-system language for “not selected to continue”. It’s common in applicant tracking systems and in regions where the phrase is standard HR wording. It usually appears after the employer screens applications or finishes interviews.
It typically means one of the following:
- Your application wasn’t shortlisted for the next stage.
- The role was filled by another candidate.
- The position was put on hold or closed.
Does It Mean You Can’t Apply Again?
No. It applies to that specific role. You can usually apply for other positions at the same company, and sometimes the same role if it’s reposted.
