Many employers use HackerRank for online coding assessments, often as the first technical step after an application. Tests are usually timed and scored automatically, so preparation and time management matter as much as coding skill.
What to Expect
- A timed test, commonly 60–120 minutes, with two to four problems. Some also include multiple-choice or SQL questions.
- Automatic scoring against visible and hidden test cases. Partial credit is often given for passing some cases.
- Test rules set by the employer. Read the instructions carefully, including anything about allowed resources and whether the session is monitored.
How to Prepare
- Practice on the platform itself. Get used to its editor, the way input and output are handled, and how test cases run.
- Review common patterns: arrays and strings, hash maps, sorting, two pointers, stacks and queues, BFS/DFS and simple dynamic programming.
- Do timed practice. Set a timer for mock assessments so pacing feels familiar.
- Brush up on SQL if the role involves data: joins, grouping and aggregate functions.
During the Assessment
- Skim every question first and start with the one you’re most confident about.
- Get a working solution, even if it isn’t optimal, then improve it if time allows. Passing some test cases beats passing none.
- Test edge cases: empty input, a single element, very large values and duplicates.
- Watch the clock. If you’re stuck for more than 10–15 minutes, move on and come back.
- Check performance. Hidden test cases often use large inputs, so an inefficient solution may time out.
Common Mistakes
- Misreading input format, such as the order of values or how lines are separated.
- Hard-coding for the sample test case.
- Spending the whole test perfecting one problem.
