HireVue is a hiring platform many large employers use for video interviews. The most common format is a one-way (on-demand) interview: you record answers to questions on screen, on your own schedule, and recruiters review them later. Some employers also use HireVue for live video interviews or assessments.
How a One-Way HireVue Interview Works
- You receive an email invitation with a deadline to complete the interview.
- You can usually do a practice question first to test your camera and microphone.
- Each question appears as text or a short video. You get a set amount of time to think, then a set amount of time to record.
- The employer decides the settings, such as preparation time, answer length and whether you can re-record. Read the instructions on each screen carefully.
Common HireVue Interview Questions
- Tell me about yourself.
- Why do you want to work here?
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team to reach a goal.
- Describe a challenge you faced and how you handled it.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
Most are behavioral questions, so prepare examples using the STAR method.
Setup Tips
- Use a laptop on a stable surface with the camera at eye level.
- Face a window or lamp so your face is well lit.
- Choose a quiet room with a plain background, and turn off notifications.
- Test your internet connection and close other apps.
- Dress as you would for an in-person interview.
Answer Tips
- Look at the camera, not the screen, when you speak.
- Use the thinking time to outline your answer: situation, action, result.
- Aim to finish early. If you have three minutes, a clear 90-second answer is better than running out of time mid-sentence.
- Speak a little slower than normal, and pause between points.
- Don’t read a script. Short bullet notes are fine, but reading word for word sounds flat on video.
How to Practise
Record yourself answering a few questions on your phone and watch them back, or rehearse with an AI mock interview that gives you realistic questions for your role. Practise with a timer so the time limit doesn’t surprise you.
After the Interview
Recruiters review recordings on their own schedule, so it can take a week or more to hear back. If the invitation named a recruiter, a short follow-up email after about a week is fine.
Get Help in the Interview Itself
Preparation gets you most of the way. For the interview itself, ApplyQuick Interview Copilot listens to each question and suggests a structured answer based on your resume and the job description, on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or a phone call. You can also rehearse first with an AI mock interview. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
